dark was the night.

Train Song - Cover by Feist and Ben Gibbard

I'm sure a lot of you have heard of this album, but I recently have rediscovered it and have been listening to it non-stop. "Dark was the Night" is a compilation cd full of all your favorite artists. We're talking Bon Iver, Spoon, Grizzly Bear, Beirut and The National, just to name a few. And the best part is all the profits from this album go towards AIDS/HIV awareness and prevention. There's no reason for you not to check it out now!

You can check this website out for more information, and an iTunes link to buy it! Definitely go check it out!!

so this is the new year...

Once again I have become a lackadaisical (word of the day!) blogger. I have no excuse other than just simply being busy, but my extremely late new years resolution is to quit making excuses for everything and to really focus on things that are important to me and make me happy.

2011 was a very big year for me. I stopped being a teenager, got a haircut, switched universities, moved across the country by myself, and totally restarted my life. Looking back now it seems like a crazy thing to do, but at the time it was the only thing that seemed to make sense. Life is all about taking risks and hoping to god that they don't totally blow up in your face, well for me at least. I thought I would give you a little peek into my life in the past year. Hope you enjoy, and expect to see more posts from me in the future!

i heart the national

It pains me to say that The National played a show in Montreal last night and sadly, I was not in attendance. This is truly devastating news, I know. I first saw the band play a few years ago, back when no one had really ever heard of them, and they rocked my world. I saw them and Modest Mouse open for R.E.M. so needless to say, it was a pretty amazing concert and I've been in love with them ever since.

I was upset that I didn't get to see them again last night, so I've been watching these videos of them performing a couple songs on Q TV to make up for it. I also went to the Bon Iver concert here on Monday night, which I don't even need to explain how amazing it was, so I was really happy to see that first video of The National featuring Bon Iver....

enjoy!

maybe you were the ocean...

I apologize once again for the lack of posts lately. It's been crazy at uni and also this past weekend i was celebrating my birthday! I will hopefully be getting back into a routine very shortly.

In music news, I stumbled upon an amazing british artist today during my daily stroll through the internet. His name is Ben Howard and I think I love him. I was watching a video and a remix of one of his songs was playing in the background and it immediately caught my attention. Once he started to sing I knew I had to find out who he was! The song I originally heard was the Nixon remix of Howard's song "Black Flies":

I urge you to check out more of his stuff, I know you won't be disappointed. Check out his website and  myspace for more music and lovely things.

gunnin' for the glitter

Red Hot Chili Peppers - I'm With You

People of the internet, there is something you must know about me. I am probably one of the biggest fans of the red hot chili peppers you will ever meet. Seriously. "Californication" was the very first album I ever bought with my own money. I can clearly remember being so young and sitting in my room listening to that cd and reading the lyrics from the booklet over and over again until i had every last lyric memorized.

That being said, I was devastated when I learnt that John Frusciante had left the band (im obsessed with him). When I heard the new single "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" off their newest album "I'm With You" let's just say I was less than impressed. So much so that for a long time I refused to even listen to the new album because I thought it might ruin everything the chili peppers ever meant to me. I know, kinda silly right?

Anyways, long story short, this is my formal internet apology to the band for judging too quickly and not giving the album a chance. My friend lent me his copy the other day and I must say I've been listening to it NON-STOP since then (seriously, I'm listening to "Dance, Dance, Dance" right now). This album has everything a true chili pepper's album should have and for that I am truly thankful! It has the funky feel of some of their earlier songs, but it also has a cool new vibe due to their new guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer.

If you are, or ever have been a fan of the chili's I totally suggest you check this album out. It will rock your sox off!

Much love internet friends,

emma.

well look what we have here...

Today is THE best day! Despite a midterm in an hour and a paper due tomorrow that i have not even started writing I am in an excellent mood! You are no doubt wondering why I could be so happy, and the reason my friends is that my Bon Iver tickets came in the mail today! Woot woot! So excited!

P.s. one of the best Canadian bands i've heard in a while the Arkells, have released their second album today. You can listen to it here. If you like what you hear I encourage you to purchase the album off iTunes. It's so important to support up and coming musicians, especially local bands!

Arcade Fire put on a free show in Montreal last night as part of the Pop Montreal music and art festival. Of course I had to go because Arcade Fire have been one of my favourite bands for a a very long time, and clearly I'm not alone. The streets were absolutely packed. Apparently around 100,000 people showed up to see the concert. Amazing! I took some pictures that I will put up later once I get them developed.

They played every song I wanted them to, although I would have loved to have heard this tune, "Crown of Love", but what can you do! If you ever get the chance to see Arcade Fire definitely do!
